Lockdown Rock ar Ras

Posted Friday August 28th, 2020 in the News category

Listen to the brand new song by a young band from Dyffryn Conwy that was recorded during the lockdown from four different houses in Dyffryn Conwy all the way to Cardiff!

The crew, who are between 13 and 15 years of age, were meeting up weekly to jam at the beginning of the year, but unfortunately this had to come to an end with lockdown restrictions in March. Luckily, modern technology and the magical gift of Zoom meant that they could continue to meet up virtually under the leadership of Llŷr Parri, one of our Bocsŵn tutors in Conwy. The end result of this was their new song – Lockdown Rock ar Ras.

As you might guess from the song title, they were inspired to write the lyrics about their experience of playing as a band via Zoom. They talk about the fact that Noa’s late, that Owain’s on mute, and that Brenig has a very mischievous cat that likes to play with the computer wires!

The process of recording a song from four different households was quite a challenge, especially as they were used to playing together before lockdown. It was a process of listening to each other’s ideas, and further developing this into a song. Everybody went on to record their individual parts separately, and Llŷr successfully merged it all together into an united song. It’s a perfect memorabilia of the lockdown period for the crew.

We at Menter Iaith Conwy are especially grateful to the Arts Council of Wales for their funding so we are able to provide the Bocsŵn project in Conwy. We would also like to thank Llŷr for all his hard work with the crew. This is only a small part of the Bocsŵn project and we are really looking forward to be able to continue with other aspects of the project when it is safe to do so.
