On Saturday, 18th of May, there was a very special day on the Ysgol Bro Gwydir field and Community Centre, funded by the National Heritage Lottery Fund.
Over 300 people from Llanrwst and surrounding areas came along to celebrate the town’s heritage, and to enjoy themselves when taking part and experiencing numerous activities.
Clwyd Axemen came to showcase their chopping wood skills, a very exiting show with a variety of saws and axes used.
Gwynros Jones came to show how to shear a sheep with a blade, with Dafydd Jones (FUW) commentating, and explaining how they handle the wool afterwards. Julia and Edith Davies brought their weaving tools and Eifiona Davies showed us how she spins the wool. This was a new experience for a lot of the audience.
Islwyn Jones brought all of his birds of prey, including Elsa, the big owl. and Myfanwy and Branwen to name a few! Everyone were ecstatic to see the birds, especially when the flew towards them.
Cimera Circus held workshops and performed all day, the children loved learning to walk on the stilts and to juggle.
All the children had a chance to give clog dancing a go with Hannah Rowlands, to create battle shields with artists Eleri Jones and Nerys Jones, to enjoy various games with the Urdd, and at lunchtime, we all had a chance to enjoy a delicious pork roll from Oinc Oink.
The highlight of the day was the brand new show by Mewn Cymeriad. Menter Iaith Conwy commissioned Myrddin ap Dafydd to write the script on the history of Llywelyn Fawr. It’s a one-man-show, performed by Neil ‘Maffia’ for the first time ever at Llanrwst. Everybody enjoyed watching the show, and some lucky members of the audience (of all ages!) had the chance to take part in the performace – a very well done to them!
It was a memorable day, and it was lovely to see the whole community brought together to celebrate the heritage of Llanrwst. A big thank you to everyone that helped us beforehand, to all of the exhibitors, and to everyone that turned up on the day to celebrate with us.
